Dominic Edge joined the Missive team earlier this year (2018). We caught up with Dom to find out what a typical day at Missive is like for a Junior Consultant… If there is such a thing as a typical day!
Diversity is arguably the key to any successful PR agency and Missive understands that only by diversifying the talent we recruit can we truly understand the complex needs of the clients and audiences that we interact with daily. Taking a look around the office I sit alongside professionals with varying experience and educational backgrounds – including History, Industrial Design and Business – who are united by a shared passion for storytelling.
Being an Environmental Science graduate with a handful of years’ experience in marketing and communications, I knew enough about PR to understand that it’s the career path I wanted to follow, but not enough to know exactly what a typical day would entail. I scoured the internet for advice and answers, and if you’re reading this, the chances are you’re in a similar position. I thought I’d help by setting out what you can expect here at Missive HQ.
My working day typically starts at around 8:30am, usually after a game of squash and a cycle to the office. Fuelled by the fresh (complimentary) coffee on offer at WeWork, my first responsibility is to compile the internal client alert, which is essentially a round up of any news that may be of interest to our clients or the agency in general. It’s a great way to get up to speed with the day’s events and to evaluate any opportunities for potential news hijacking.
After that, I go through my inbox to answer any requests and organise my to-do list, before a 1-2-1 with my line manager, or I might join the morning news review to look for opportunities for our clients.
It truly is a cliche to say that no two days are the same, but at Missive that statement is ramped up to no two hours are the same. In the mornings I can be found compiling a press release or media list, creating a profiling document ahead of an interview, writing a thought leadership post or helping manage our working relationships with clients. Sometimes we’ll have account team meetings to ensure we’re all singing off the same hymn sheet. The only day-to-day guarantee is that I’ll be plugged into BBC 6Music’s Morning Show! I haven’t experienced such a tight-knit team as I have here, where everyone is extremely supportive and nurturing towards each other.
Lunch presents an opportunity to stretch my legs in Moorgate or around the Barbican as well as a brief check of the football news, unless the fortnightly lunch and learn is taking place in the office. This is an opportunity for a team member to informally present and share their expertise on a topic to the rest of the company, whether it be the latest developments in artificial intelligence, a how-to guide on SEO or what’s going to change under GDPR.
Afternoons are often just as varied as the mornings and I also try to put some time aside for the Missive Academy. Every team member is enrolled into the Academy and earns credits for learning. This can be through attending a course or joining a webinar among other things.
My day typically finishes at around 6:00pm, although the flexible working environment means that I can leave at any time of my choosing. Missive is built on trust and every staff member is treated as an individual, which is truly one of my favourite things about the job.
If I could conclude this blog with one piece of advice, it’s to take the above with a pinch of salt. I’ve outlined just a few of the tasks that may make up my day, but an unwritten part of the company policy is to never let an individual settle into a mundane and draining 9-5 experience. If you’re looking to constantly challenge yourself, break the status quo and help tech companies set themselves apart from the noise then take a chance on Missive.
We’re on the hunt for a Junior PR Consultant to join Dom and the rest of the team at Missive.
If you’re feeling inspired and would like to join our award winning team, email your CV and cover letter outlining why you would be a wonderful addition to hello@missive.co.uk.
